Kate Nixon worked for the city of Virginia Beach for 10 years. She was afraid of co-worker Dewayne Craddock, to the point that she discussed bringing a handgun to work in her purse the very day before the shooting. But she decided against it because the city of Virginia Beach has declared itself a “gun free zone.” Kate Nixon was murdered by DeWayne Craddock on May 31 along with 11 other coworkers.
“Kate expressed to her husband concerns about this. In fact, they had a discussion the night before about whether or not she should take a pistol and hide it in her handbag — and decided not to, ultimately, because there’s a policy apparently against having any kind of weapons that are concealed in the building.” Nixon family attorney Kevin MartingayleFox News
The prohibition against carrying a weapon even applies to persons with a concealed carry permit. Fat lot of good that did the 12 employees struck down by a man with murderous intent. They were left defenseless from evil.
“The prohibition against possession of a weapon applies even if a member has a permit to carry a concealed weapon …Employees who violate this policy will be subject to discipline, up to and including dismissal.” Virginia Beach city policyFox
Now to show the idiocy of Virginia Beach leadership, they are planning to go even further at their next council meeting. Instead of seeing the real problem – gun free zones- they plan to put forth the idea that all Virginia communities should be able to prohibit guns in government buildings. Seriously?
“There is an item on next week’s City Council meeting for the Council to discuss a resolution to support a bill to allow localities to prohibit the carrying of firearms in governmental buildings.” Julie Hill, Director of the Communications Office at Virginia Beach
In other words, they want to make EVERY city employee in EVERY part of Virginia sitting ducks for killers. Brilliant backwards thinking. Craddock entered a special door that required a key card for entry- in other words, he was supposed to have been unarmed. He ignored that rule, as all criminals do.
How would ANY gun law have stopped DeWayne Craddock from killing his coworkers? He bought his guns legally, in different years, so it wasn’t a last minute purchase that could be stopped by “one gun a month” laws. He passed “background checks” both times. He didn’t use an “assault weapon,” just two handguns. He didn’t use a bump stock. The suppressor on one of those weapons made no difference in his ability to shoot people.
And yet, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam demanded a special session ot push through his gun control agenda that hits all of those points. Totally and completely ineffective ideas by a Governor trying to distract from accusations against him for racism.
But a handgun in the purse of a wary employee like Kate Nixon might just have stopped that massacre before so many died.
