Vehicle Plows in to Pedestrians in Times Square

By Faye Higbee

A man driving a 2009 Maroon Honda careened down 3 city blocks and plowed into pedestrians in crowded Times Square on Thursday. One 18 year old woman was killed, and at least 22 others injured, some in critical condition, but expected to survive. The suspect attempted to flee the scene but was tackled to the ground by 5 people who held him for police.

The suspect was identified as Richard Rojas, 26, a US citizen from the Bronx who reportedly served in the Navy. He has a history of prior arrests for Driving While Intoxicated, according to media. He drove his car down three city blocks at a high rate of speed, coming to rest at a lamp post and steel barriers designed to stop just this sort of incident at 45th and Broadway. He has allegedly done this sort of thing before, as he had been diving at 99 mph during one of his previous DUI charges. Supposedly he admitted smoking marijuana before today’s incident, which would explain why he only blew a 0.0 on the breath test.

He had been arrested previously for beating a cab driver at the Jacksonville’s Mayport Naval Base. He also threatened to kill police in the 2012 incident. Police are currently searching his residence. He was reportedly an Electrician’s Mate and assigned to the USS Carney.

Some of the witnesses felt the action was intentional as they tried to escape the car hurtling down the sidewalk. Both the “mentally ill” aspect and the “drunk driver” scenarios are present in this situation at the same time. Mayor De Blasio stated that there was “no indication” of terrorism, but said that both the President and FBI were notified of the incident. It is odd that it so clearly resembles other Islamic terrorist attacks in Europe.

Regardless of whether he thought the world was coming to an end, or he smoked too many joints, or some other motive, he faces vehicular homicide charges  and many more. He won’t see daylight again for a while.
