One person was diagnosed with a case of Monkeypox in Massachusetts so far in 2022. So the US government purchased 13 million Monkeypox vaccines for $119 Million. Britain has 9 suspected cases, and Canada is monitoring approximately 12. The CDC is monitoring 6 people who travelled with a British man who came down with it. Other outbreaks worldwide are similarly small so far. The Smallpox vaccine provides some protection. The Strategic National Stockpile is said to have enough Smallpox vaccine to cover the entire US population.

On Thursday, Newsweek reported that the U.S. government bought $119 million of Jynneos vaccines from biotechnology company Bavarian Nordic, which makes the vaccine, on Wednesday.

Bavarian Nordic announced in a press release on Wednesday that “the U.S. Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), part of the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, has exercised the first options under the contract to supply a freeze-dried version of JYNNEOS® smallpox vaccine, thus allowing for the first doses of this version to be manufactured and invoiced in 2023 and 2024.”

US officials say they are expecting more cases of the “rare” virus.

Monkeypox is a rare but potentially serious viral illness that typically begins with flu-like illness and swelling of the lymph nodes and progresses to a rash on the face and body. Most infections last 2-to-4 weeks. In parts of central and west Africa where monkeypox occurs, people can be exposed through bites or scratches from rodents and small mammals, preparing wild game, or having contact with an infected animal or possibly animal products. The virus does not spread easily between people; transmission can occur through contact with body fluids, monkeypox sores, items that have been contaminated with fluids or sores (clothing, bedding, etc.), or through respiratory droplets following prolonged face-to-face contact.

It can also be spread by sharing bodily fluids, which officials say often occurs when men have sex with men. The Massachusetts Department of health noted strongly that the case poses NO risk to the general population.

How many people are they expecting to contract it? Or are they placing this many doses in the Strategic National Stockpile in case it becomes a bioweapon?

Portugal reported more than 20 suspected cases of the infection this month, including five cases confirmed by the National Institutes of Health Dr. Ricardo Jorge Tuesday, per a press release. The cases were all mostly young males who developed ulcerative lesions…

McQuiston confirmed the CDC is monitoring six Americans for monkeypox symptoms for 21 days, the general incubation period of the virus. They were traveling on the same flight as a British man who recently tested positive for monkeypox…

The Jynneos vaccine is licensed with the FDA for prevention of Smallpox and Monkeypox in persons 18 years or older.
