Dudley, North Carolina – Three Wayne County deputies were shot as they attempted to serve involuntary committment papers on a subject who ultimately barricaded himself inside his home. The suspect was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted sunshot wound after a nine hour standoff that left one of the three deputies dead, the other two in stable condition. The Sheriff’s Department said they had no history with the suspect. (WRAL)
The incident occurred in Wayne County near Dudley at around 10:30 a.m. on Monday. All media reporting on this incident said that the three deputies were wearing “utility vests.” It is not clear if these were tactical bulletroof vests or something else. Generally “utility vests” are the brightly colored style not used for protection from gunfire.

We regretfully inform you that Sgt. Matthew Fishman, 1 of the 3 Wayne County deputies shot on Monday morning, has died from his injuries. He was just 38 years old. A GoFundMe has been established to help assist his surviving family members. Please share!
The suspect was identified as Jourdan Hamilton, 23. The type of order they were attempting to serve meant that someone thought Hamilton was a danger to himself or others, although who filed it is unknown at this time. Deputies entered his home at around 8 p.m., but he was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Sgt Fishman was with the Wayne County Sheriff’s office since 2010. He was the son of Dave Fishman, pastor at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church in Goldsboro. He leaves behind a wife and 2 children.
As of Monday night, one of two bullets that struck Torres was still in his body. His father stated it was lodged in his hip, but the other round went through. He has been with the Wayne County department since 2018. Corporal Cox has been with the department since 2020. All three deputies had previous law enforcement experience.
