The gloves are off in the fight over gun control, and tempers are running high. Democrats plan to do whatever it takes to force rigid gun control and they don’t care about the consequences of their tirades against the Constitution. They are oblivious to the idea of protecting students from the criminals instead of the guns. It was obvious in today’s hearing on the “Protecting Our Kids Act.”
Story continues below:
“You will not stop us from advancing the Protecting Our Kids Act today. If the filibuster obstructs us, we will abolish it. If the Supreme Court objects, we will expand it. And we will not rest until we have taken weapons of war out of circulation and our communities each and every day.”Rep. Mondaire Jones (D-NY)
Jones’ tirade may have gotten him an Oscar nomination, but Republicans didn’t think much of it. Yes, it’s obvious, the gloves are off. And the fight continued from there.
“Democrats blame guns. They criticize the NRA. They call Republicans names. But let’s be honest, they’ve told us what they want to do. Their real beef is with the Second Amendment. Their goal, plain and simple, is to get rid of the Second Amendment. Joe Biden said it the other day, said he wants to ban 9mm handguns.”Rep Jim Jordan (R-OH)
The sparks were flying as Democrats claimed their usual emotional arguments against guns. The gun control package would bar 18-20-year-olds from purchasing semi-automatic weapons.
“It goes through this long analysis of the history of the Second Amendment and says those rights to self-defense at the core of the Second Amendment, that 18- to 20-year-olds are covered by that right…the same goes for every other right in the Bill of Rights… But there’s a willingness to just ram through this package and the answer is we don’t have any patience for you if you’re objecting. The voices are raised, the accusations are made, Republicans are complicit. I can tell you this, and let me be clear: You are not going to bully your way into stripping Americans of fundamental rights.”Rep. Dan Bishop, R-N.C.
When Rep Greg Steube (R-FL), who attended the hearing via video from his home brought out some of his guns to illustrate a point, Rep Sheila Jackson Lee interrupted him by snidely commenting that she hoped the guns weren’t loaded. Which touched off a equal but opposite response from Rep Steube: “I’m at my house. I can do whatever I want with my guns.” Yep, the gloves are off.
Later in the hearing, Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., pointed to a different problem with the Democrats’ bill, which is the same problem that hurt the Gun Free School Zone Act, which prohibited the carrying of guns near schools. The Supreme Court had initially ruled in 1995 that the law was outside the scope of Congress’s powers, leading to an amendment that said it only applied to guns that had moved in or had an impact on interstate commerce.
Massie noted that while some of the provisions in the current bill included that specification to make sure they fell under the Constitution’s Commerce Clause, others did not.
“If actually two of the bills say it only applies to firearms involved in interstate commerce, does that mean the other four are unconstitutional?” Massie asked. “It actually means all six are unconstitutional and they’re trying to save two of them with the provision that killed the Gun Free School Zone Act in 1995.”Ronn Blitzer at Fox
Yes the gloves are off and they need to be. If Congress can’t stop this runaway Democratic train intent on decimating the Constitution, the Republic we live in will not stand.
