Taliban Inclusive? Females Must Exit Workforce, Stay Home

As the US dashed out of Afghanistan, the Taliban promised that their government would be inclusive to women. They lied. (Surprise.) The Taliban government issued an edict that women involved in the Kabul city government must stay home, except for a few doing work that men can’t do – like attending to women’s restrooms, for example. Women in government jobs prior to the Taliban takeover ran about 1,000 out of the 3,000 workers in the Kabul government across all departments. Women were helping tend to the city of nearly 5 million people. No more. Women have also been banned from working in the private sector: banks, TV stations, and others.

During his first press briefing since being appointed by the Taliban, interim Kabul Mayor Hamdullah Namony said that women must remain at home regardless of their employment status, pending a further decision.

Exceptions may be made for women who cannot be replaced by men, including some in the design and engineering departments, and the attendants of public toilets for women, he said.

“There are some areas that men can’t do it, we have to ask our female staff to fulfill their duties, there is no alternative for it,” the interim mayor said.

The Taliban are not likely to ever be inclusive. Prior to the United States deployments in Afghanistan, women were not allowed to go to school, work in public, or even go outside without a male family member. In the twenty years of US involvement there, women were not only becoming educated, but had begun to achieve in new areas. The public face of the Taliban that people believe is not the truth. It’s the real Taliban that is embarking on a campaign to subjugate their women once again. But America is the bad guys according to the Democrats.

In recent days, the new Taliban government issued several decrees rolling back the rights of girls and women. It told female middle- and high school students that they could not return to school for the time being, while boys in those grades resumed studies this weekend. Female university students were informed that studies would take place in gender-segregated settings from now on, and that they must abide by a strict Islamic dress code. Under the U.S.-backed government deposed by the Taliban, university studies had been co-ed, for the most part.

On Friday, the Taliban shut down the Women’s Affairs Ministry, replacing it with a ministry for the “propagation of virtue and the prevention of vice” and tasked with enforcing Islamic law.

Pushback – a dangerous situation for those who want the Taliban to be inclusive

On Sunday, a little over a dozen women attempted a protest outside the former Women’s Affairs Ministry. It lasted about 10 minutes until they had a confrontation with a man. Then they left as the Taliban watched. According to Stripes, the Taliban have broken up several women’s protests by force in recent days.

Approximately 30 women held a news conference in a basement in Kabul, and said they were going to demand the Taliban re-open the public spaces to women.

It’s our right. We want to talk to them. We want to tell them that we have the same rights as they have.

Unfortunately, the Taliban are NOT the talking kind of folks. They can’t be reasoned with, or cajoled into doing something. Demonstrating, protesting, all of those things can get these ladies killed in a heartbeat. The Taliban’s version of Islam is rigid, unforgiving and deadly. They’ve already been accused of beatings of women in various parts of the country, including the murder of a pregnant policewoman in front of her family on 9-4-2021.

There are other issues such as a trashed economy, which is forcing people to sell their possessions on the street in order to buy food. And the Christians who are being systematically destroyed. The Taliban are certainly not inclusive.
