St. Louis, Missouri – A string of arsons at predominantly black churches in the St. Louis area has people on edge. Six churches have had their front doors set on fire in the last 10 days, with varying degrees of damage. Thus far there have been no injuries. All were within a 3 mile radius of Ferguson.
The ATF and the St. Louis Regional Bomb Unit are investigating the series of fires as possible hate crimes. Though many people have taken to social media to complain about the lack of “media coverage” they are incorrect – nearly every media outlet and all of the affiliates have carried the story.
“It is arson. These [fires] are being intentionally set.” St. Louis Fire Captain Garon Mosby
Police have not speculated on the motive, but have admitted they are investigating it as a possible hate crime.
St. Louis church arson fires
The first hit the Bethel Non-Denominational Church in Jennings on October 8. Two days later, the New Northside Missionary Baptist, also in Jennings, suffered from fire.
In addition, fires were set at Minerva-St. Augustine Catholic Church on October 14 and New Testament Church of Christ on October 15, and over the weekend there were blazes at the New Life Missionary Baptist Church and Ebenezer Lutheran Church.
The churches do not appear to be focusing on the race issue.
“This is a spiritually sick person. This is a sin issue. It’s not a race issue.” Reverend David Triggs, New Life Missionary Baptist Church
Is this racial or something else?
People are calling this action racist when it may NOT be a race issue. Arsonists fall into several categories, and only one of them is extremism. The six categories of arson fires are: Vandalism, Excitement, Revenge, Crime concealment, Profit, Extremism.
It is interesting that everyone is assuming the person that set the fires is white. That would be a great way to cause more racial division in an area already reeling from massive racial strife. What if…
