South Korean President Moon Jae-in and his wife Kim Jung-Sook travelled to Hawaii on September 22 to bring with them the remains of US Service members and South Koreans who lived in Hawaii and fought alongside US forces in the Korean War. It was the first-ever joint repatriation ceremony.

South Korean President Moon Jae-In and First Lady Kim Jung-Sook were on Oahu Wednesday to honor fallen servicemembers.

They attended the first-ever joint repatriation ceremony at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in the afternoon.

There, the remains of 68 Republic of Korea soldiers and 6 U.S. service members who died during the Korean War were returned.

The ceremony was held to honor those fallen warriors 71 years since the start of the Korean War on June 25.

South Korean President Moon also went to the National Cemetery of the Pacific (the Punch Bowl) to honor the fallen. The South Korean news outlet Yonhap reported that he also planned to award ‘‘posthumous medals to independence fighters who devoted themselves, while living in Hawaii, to efforts for Korea’s liberation from Japan’s colonial rule from 1910-45.”

Did this ceremony cause controversy? Yes, but perhaps because no one directly from the White House bothered to attend. Adm. John Aquilino, Commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command came to greet President Moon Jae-in. Technically, that’s fine, the Commander would be considered an “envoy” in this case. But some were extremely unhappy about the lack of White House attendance.

As people correctly pointed out to Sean Spicer, there are plenty of military people in Hawaii that could be considered an envoy. Although, it would have been great if Biden had showed up so he could check his watch during the ceremony. Then we’d really have someone to pick on.

Biden checked his watch ‘multiple times’ during the Dignified Transfer ceremony at Dover AFB
