Sen Manchin Sick of Sen Schumer? Gets Up and Leaves During Schumer Diatribe Against GOP

During Sen Schumer’s victory lap against Republicans on Thursday, Sen Manchin (D-WV) kept shaking his head as if he was purely disgusted by the divisive rhetoric. After a double-handed facepalm, he finally got up and left as the Majority Leader was still spewing his nonsense over the passage of the short-term debt ceiling bill. One news outlet described the situation as an episode of “Celebrity Death Match.”

Story continues below:

Senate Democrats managed to con 11 Republicans into voting with them to end debate on the short-term debt-ceiling bill so it could go to the Senate Floor for a vote. Republicans folded like a cheap suitcase. The bill guarantees that funding will once again bring angst to the Senate in December. Thus far, neither the Infrastructure or the $3.5T spending bill are likely to pass, thanks to the stalwart Sen Manchin being opposed. The eternal optimist, Sen Manchin believes they’ll eventually get their act together and pass something more long term for keeping the government open.

Here’s what it looked like:

Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., went viral Thursday night over his reaction to Sen. Chuck Schumer’s speech on the Senate floor shortly after the vote to extend the government’s borrowing authority into December.

Schumer, the Senate majority leader, used the platform to criticize Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., for earlier comments about forcing Democrats to raise the debt ceiling without any Republican support—by going through a “drawn out, convoluted and risky reconciliation process.”

“That was simply unacceptable to my caucus,” Schumer said.

Manchin, who is perhaps the second most popular person in Washington, D.C. these days, was seated directly behind Schumer and could be seen shaking his head during the speech. He looks like a baseball manager sitting in a dugout after his team gives up the lead. Manchin appeared to be exasperated as Schumer continued talking. At one point, he could be seen putting his head into his hands and eventually getting up from his chair while his New York colleague continued.

Reportedly, Sen Manchin went to Schumer on the Senate floor after his speech and told him it was “f***ing stupid.” If Democrats wants some cooperation on the bills to come, Schumer botched it by his hateful speech. But then, it’s fairly common for Democrats to be hateful these days.

“I didn’t think it was appropriate at this time. We have to de-weaponize. You can’t be playing politics. None of us can — on both sides… Civility is gone.”

Sen Manchin to reporter

Now the issue becomes how Democrats plan to get past Sen Manchin on the two extreme spending bills and the debt ceiling looming in December. Manchin told a reporter that “reconciliation” should not be necessary, that legislators should do what they’re supposed to do and pass bills. We hope for the sake of this nation that common sense will somehow beat a path to the Democrats who haven’t figured that out.
