Police were called to the report of a domestic disturbance at around 3:30 a.m. on February 7 at an apartment in North Seattle. When they arrived, they found that Irma Rodriguez Vaquedano, 48, had been beheaded. The suspect, Danny Rodriguez (no relation to the victim) had a knife in his hand. They attempted to talk him down, but ultimately had to fatally shoot him.
The Seattle Police Department released the video from the two officers’ body cameras later on the day of the incident. There are several things to note in the videos: first, as they broke through the door, note that it appeared that the suspect had been stabbing the door with his knife.
Through a crack in the door, the officers saw the suspect with a large knife. After breaking in the door, they saw that the victim had been beheaded.
The Daily Mail reported,
They then saw a woman’s body lying on the floor, with one of the two cops saying ‘s***, she’s had her head cut off’.
The victim was later identified as 48-year-old Irma Rodriguez Vaquedano.
In the body-worn camera footage, the officers could be heard ordering the suspect, who was wearing a camouflage jacket, to drop the knife he was holding and get on the ground.
He complied at first, dropping face-down onto a mattress, but he then got back up and despite police yelling at him not to pick the weapon back up, he grabbed it again.
The suspect appeared to wave the knife and both arms in the air and move towards the police while constantly remonstrating with the officers in Spanish.
The problem they encountered wasn’t just that a woman had been beheaded. The suspect didn’t speak English. As they shouted “policia” at him and told him numerous times to get down on the ground and to drop the knife, he said something in what appears to be Spanish. But neither officer understood him.
The officers fatally shot him after he appeared to move aggressively toward them with the knife.
Also in the apartment were two children, a man and a woman, who were hiding in another room during the altercation.
Vaquedano was apparently from Honduras, according to reports. The immigration status of the two people is unclear. It is unknown at this point where Danny Rodriguez was from.
