Poway, California – A 19 year old male was taken into custody after a shooting at a San Diego Synagogue occurred during the final day of the Jewish Passover celebration. One woman was killed, and three others injured during the shooting. Mayor Steve Vaus stated that the incident is likely a hate crime, based on statements the shooter made upon entry to the building.

Update: The shooter has been identified as 19 year old John Earnest.

The shooting took place at the Chabad of Poway Synagogue just north of San Diego at around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. Witnesses said the man was screaming and cursing, yelling that “All Jews must die” as he fired over 10 rounds at the celebrants, according to Reuters.

The Rabbi reportedly confronted the shooter even after he himself had been shot and attempted to calm him. As the man fled the Synagogue, an off duty Border Patrol agent tried to shoot the gunman, but missed and struck the suspect’s car.

CBS reported,

San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit said the 19-year-old suspect called police to report the shooting and a California Highway Patrol officer heard it on a police scanner, saw the suspect and pulled him over. Nisleit said the suspect got out of his car with his hands up and he was taken into custody without incident.

“I also understand from folks on the scene that this shooter was engaged by people in the congregation and those brave people certainly prevented this from being a much worse tragedy.” Mayor Vaus

A female juvenile and two adult males, one of which is the Rabbi, are in stable condition at Palomar Medical Center, according to Sheriff Bill Gore.

The left was on a rampage on Twitter, blaming President Trump for the hate, even though the President not only has Jewish friends, but relatives as well. The 19 year old male specifically said he was NOT a Trump supporter and hated him and Conservatives.

The synagogue stated on Facebook that they were hosting the last Passover celebration today, April 27.
