Petition for JROTC Student Peter Wang to Receive Full Military Honors at Burial

By Faye Higbee

JROTC student Peter Wang died last week in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. He was shot multiple times as he was holding the door open for fleeing students and staff. He died a hero. Now a movement has begun to get him full military honors at his burial.

Even leftists who don’t like the military have been tweeting in support of the petition.

The White House petition reads:

Peter Wang, 15, was one of the students killed in Florida this past week. He was a Jrotc Cadet who was last seen, in uniform, holding doors open and thus allowing other students, teachers, and staff to flee to safety. Wang was killed in the process. His selfless and heroic actions have led to the survival of dozens in the area. Wang died a hero, and deserves to be treated as such, and deserves a full honors military burial.

He is due to be laid to rest on Tuesday, Feb 20.

Full military honors are mandated by law only for eligible service members. This eligiblity requirements are:

  • Military members on active duty or in the Selected Reserve.
  • Former military members who served on active duty and departed under conditions other than dishonorable.
  • Former military members who completed at least one term of enlistment or period of initial obligated service in the Selected Reserve and departed under conditions other than dishonorable.
  • Former military members discharged from the Selected Reserve due to a disability incurred or aggravated in the line of duty.

Whether or not the military would allow a change in those requirements is doubtful , but not impossible. It is a beautiful sentiment that so many wish to see Peter Wang honored in a manner that he would have loved. It was his  goal to attend West Point.
