JROTC student Peter Wang died last week in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. He was shot multiple times as he was holding the door open for fleeing students and staff. He died a hero. Now a movement has begun to get him full military honors at his burial.
Even leftists who don’t like the military have been tweeting in support of the petition.
The White House petition reads:
Peter Wang, 15, was one of the students killed in Florida this past week. He was a Jrotc Cadet who was last seen, in uniform, holding doors open and thus allowing other students, teachers, and staff to flee to safety. Wang was killed in the process. His selfless and heroic actions have led to the survival of dozens in the area. Wang died a hero, and deserves to be treated as such, and deserves a full honors military burial.
He is due to be laid to rest on Tuesday, Feb 20.
Full military honors are mandated by law only for eligible service members. This eligiblity requirements are:
- Military members on active duty or in the Selected Reserve.
- Former military members who served on active duty and departed under conditions other than dishonorable.
- Former military members who completed at least one term of enlistment or period of initial obligated service in the Selected Reserve and departed under conditions other than dishonorable.
- Former military members discharged from the Selected Reserve due to a disability incurred or aggravated in the line of duty.
Whether or not the military would allow a change in those requirements is doubtful , but not impossible. It is a beautiful sentiment that so many wish to see Peter Wang honored in a manner that he would have loved. It was his goal to attend West Point.
Peter Wang was killed in the Stoneman Douglas attack. According to other students, he was holding a door so others could get to safety & died still wearing his JROTC uniform. His friends started this petition for him receive a Full Honors Military Burial. https://t.co/Y0TRTfV7Gi pic.twitter.com/L1aK84rvdj

If I had 100,000 friends, I would ask each of them to RT this and sign the petition. Parkland JROTC member Peter Wang was in uniform and holding a door so fellow students could flee when he was killed…in the line of duty. Rest in peace, Hero. https://t.co/Dg4eg90tuT

REST IN PEACE: Peter Wang held the door open so classmates could escape from the gunman at his Florida school. He died holding that door while wearing his Junior ROTC uniform, and now there are calls for him to receive a military burial with full honors. https://t.co/WGfCI4Cub9 pic.twitter.com/KvhvnmJ98n

https://t.co/jzwNK4DZh5 100000000% agree. This young man died putting others before himself. He wasn’t being paid to protect people he was just a normal ‘kid’ who acted to save others at the price of his own life. He could’ve run but he held the door so others can run to safety.
