Pelosi’s Plane Landed in Taiwan, Not Shot Out of the Sky

Faye Higbee

China was saber-rattling and didn’t shoot the military jet down. Nancy Pelosi’s plane landed in Taiwan and wasn’t the worse for wear, although rumor had it that a Chinese plane “buzzed” it along the way. “Buzzing” is a lot different than shooting it down. But the Chinese government is definitely enraged about her trip.

Pelosi was accompanied by Democratic Reps. Gregory Meeks of New York, Mark Takano of California, Suzan DelBene of Washington, Raja Krishnamoorthi of Illinois and Andy Kim of New Jersey. Twenty six GOP Senators supported her effort to go to Taiwan as well. Pelosi’s plane landed, and contrary to some Chinese political commentators, it landed without a scratch from missiles. WWIII averted for another day. She leaves Wednesday.

Not only did she have bipartisan Congressional support, the US Military wasn’t far away. The USS Ronald Reagan and its strike group, as well as the amphibious ship USS Tripoli were “on patrol” in the area. Though the military claimed it was pre-scheduled. China was enraged, saying it would defend itself.

This is a serious violation of the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiqués. It has a severe impact on the political foundation of China-U.S. relations, and seriously infringes upon China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. There is but one China in the world, Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory, and the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China…

Since Speaker Pelosi is the incumbent leader of the U.S. Congress, her visit to and activities in Taiwan, in whatever form and for whatever reason, is a major political provocation to upgrade U.S. official exchanges with Taiwan. China absolutely does not accept this, and the Chinese people absolutely reject this…

No country, no forces and no individual should ever misestimate the firm resolve, strong will and great capability of the Chinese Government and people to defend state sovereignty and territorial integrity and to achieve national reunification and rejuvenation. China will definitely take all necessary measures to resolutely safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity in response to the U.S. Speaker’s visit.

China’s Foreign Ministry

Pro-China demonstrators were on hand with signs calling Pelosi a “witch” (no problem with that). But the vast majority of people welcomed her excitedly. It has been since 1997 that a House Speaker visited the island. China switched to attempting to intimidate the UK against visiting Taiwan. Once a bully, always a bully. Will their noise continue to fail? We sincerely hope so.
