Early in the morning on April 13, 2015, the SWAT team descended on the home of Shane Schielein in Peoria, Illinois, with the expressed intent of serving a search warrant. They handcuffed him, shoved his wife to the wet grass on the ground outside, and sequestered his children in the kitchen as they proceeded to rifle through his belongings. Shane is the owner of the American Reapers Page on Facebook.
But it is not just the entrance of the SWAT team that was disconcerting, it was that they were looking for any pamphlets, materials, or documents relating to the “overthrow of the government or Islam.”
Why would Islam be specifically delineated? To what government are they referring- America’s or an Islamic one?
The search warrant left on his table gave them license to confiscate numerous items:
Weapons – they confiscated his special collection of swords and knives.
They sought any evidence of conspiracies to destroy religious property – emails, business cards, address books, personal correspondence, cell phones, computers, storage media, modems, wi-fi, browsing history, user profiles, any and all “evidence” of who might have been involved with him in the so-called “conspiracy” to overthrow the government and Islam. They also looked for malware that could be used to cause harm to other computers.
In their penchant to find all this alleged evidence, they trashed his home, upset his children and wife…and in general made fun of the whole situation as they sat on his couch with their feet up on the coffee table and laughing.
Because his wife – who is a sports coach – had some bruises on her arm at the time, one of the officers secretly handed her his business card and advised her to call if she was in ‘trouble.’ Obviously they believed that her bruises were due to being beaten by her husband, rather than simply from her coaching.
Since the visit from the police, Shane’s 8 year old son has lost his friends, who are no longer allowed to come and play with him.
Shane has had people turn away from him if he attempts to greet them. He is now the pariah of the neighborhood, when he stated that he has always been kind to his neighbors.
This is not the first time that an American patriot has been targeted. What would YOU do if this should happen to you?
