North Korea Tunnel Collapse – 200 Feared Dead at Nuclear Site

A tunnel collapse in North Korea reportedly killed 100 people and crushed 100 rescuers, according to Japanese News on October 10. It appears that Kim Jong-Un’s mountain is crumbling after all those nuclear tests, which we reported as a possibility previously.

Asahi TV reported that about 200 people were killed in a massive collapse in an underground tunnel at the Punggye nuclear facility in Gilju, North Gyeongsang Province, where the North carried out the sixth nuclear test last month.”

The incident reportedly occurred during the construction of a tunnel at the Punggye nuclear test site on October 10. About 100 people were trapped in the collapse, but when 100 more tried to free them, they were also killed.

The North Korean government has not confirmed the Japanese account, and we were unable to locate it anywhere on the KCNA news aggregator. Of course, North Korea has a rule- never tell your own citizens what’s happening, just keep up the bluster.

The mountain was showing signs of crumbling after the last nuclear test in September. Landslides were observed in satellite photos of the site.

Fox reported,

No officials have confirmed the Japanese TV station’s claims, but experts have feared for more than a month that the test site was on the verge of crumbling since the nuclear blast. North Korea said it detonated a hydrogen bomb, calling it a “perfect success.” …

It’s unclear if the mountain will collapse in the near future, but the report said there was “significant cracking” and “irreversible strain” on the land because of the nuclear test.

Some experts also said Mantap was suffering from “tired mountain syndrome” due to the stress on the ground, the Washington Post reported. Chinese scientists have also warned the mountain could collapse and release radiation. Radioactive xenon-133 was detected in South Korea after the test.

As we previously noted, scientists were concerned that the collapsing mountain would “release many bad things.”

Will this collapse mean Kim will begin testing – or even attacking- in the Pacific? It likely won’t be the end of his plans. But he had better not make our leadership any angrier by doing something stupid, or those “military options” may be engaged.
