Mother Fends off Mountain Lion That Attacked Her Son
Pitkin County, Colorado – A little before 8 p.m. on Friday, a Colorado mother rescued her 5 year old son from a Mountain Lion that attacked him.
The child was playing outside when he began screaming. His mother heard his cries and ran outside to find the lion on top of her son.
Without thinking, she ran to the lion and was able to pull her son away.
The Denver channel reported,
“A man called 911 and reported that his son had been attacked by a mountain lion in the area of mile marker 4 on Lower River Road, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office. Lower River Road is located approximately 10 miles northwest of the City of Aspen in unincorporated Pitkin County.
The father told 911 dispatchers that he was driving his injured son to Aspen Valley Hospital…
“The mother ran outside, saw the mountain lion on her son and was able to physically remove her son from the mountain lion,” investigators stated.
“The boy sustained injuries to his face, head and neck,” according to the statement. “The mother sustained minor injuries to her hand and legs.”
Wildlife officials put down the lion. The home was about 10 miles outside of Aspen, Colorado in Pitkin County.
The boy was taken to Aspen Valley Hospital, where he is reportedly in fair condition. The mother was released.
Mountain Lion attacks
There have been 3 fatal mountain lion attacks in Colorado since 1991. It takes serious guts to confront a mountain lion that is in attack mode. Dogs have been excellent protectors of children in wilderness settings, and even they are often severely wounded.
A Cougar/Puma/Mountain Lion attack several years ago in Idaho left a German Shepherd with critical injuries. She saved the young child, but it nearly cost the dog’s life. She eventually survived, but it was touch and go and took months to heal. Wildlife officials also had to destroy that lion.
This mom is extremely lucky that she and her son only received minor injuries. It goes to show you that if you come between a mom and her child, there will be hell to pay.
