The US Army awarded Heroism medals to three JROTC students killed in last week’s mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida. Cadet Alaina Petty, Cadet Martin Duque, and Cadet Peter Wang were the recipients.
Cadet Alaina Petty, 14, was laid to rest on Monday. Her family was given the medal during the ceremony. Cadet Duque, 13, will be laid to rest on Saturday, and his family will receive the medal at that time.
Remembering the hero who held the door open for others at the risk of his life
As we previously reported, a White House petition for Peter Wang had circulated asking for him to be buried with full military honors. Along with the others, he was granted the medal for heroism. His family asked for him to be buried in his uniform, and the medal was on it. But the Army also gave his family a keepsake medal that will remind them of the courage of their son.
The US Military Academy at West Point also bestowed a Certificate of Appointment for Peter, since that was a special goal of his life. Such certificates are a rare situation, but the USMA felt it was an appropriate one in this case.
“It was an appropriate way for USMA to honor this brave young man. West Point has given posthumous offers of admissions in very rare instances for those candidates or potential candidate’s whose actions exemplified the tenets of Duty, Honor and Country.” USMA statement

The medal is awarded when members “involved the acceptance of danger and extraordinary responsibilities, exemplifying praiseworthy fortitude and courage.”
