Mass Stabbing at Chinese Middle School

A mass killing took place at a Chinese Middle School on Friday. Seven children, 5 girls and 2 boys, were stabbed to death by an adult who was a former student. Nine girls and three boys were also wounded in the event. The adult told authorities that he “hated” the school children because he was “bullied” while he attended the school.

The stabbing occurred at a Middle School in Shaanxi province’s Mizhi county.  The suspect, whose surname is Zhao, is being held by authorities after confessing to the crime.

This incident is just the latest in a long string of knife attacks in China, even in schools.  In January of 2017, according to the New York Post, a man ran into a kindergarten and stabbed 11 students, all of them survived.

Sound familiar? Even in Communist China. Because it’s the person, not the tool. And it is notoriously difficult to regulate knives.

In 2014, a skinny 16 year old kid named Alex Hribal managed to stab 22 people  with two large kitchen knives at Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville,  Pennsylvania, as reported by the New York Daily News. One of those 22 people stabbed was a school security guard. He was charged as an adult with several counts of attempted murder as well as aggravated assault.

According to the Smithsonian Magazine, outside the US, mass murderers tend to use knives. Part of that is rigid gun control. But even in the rigidly controlled UK, their crime rate is out the roof for both knife and gun crime as we previously reported. Where there’s a will there’s a way.

“It’s unclear exactly how many knife attacks have taken place in China over the years, but the almost regular media reports of the attacks suggest that efforts to regulate the purchase of knives or punish offenders haven’t been successful.

Most recently, targets for these knife attacks have included schools and shopping centers. Last June, knife-wielding assailants killed nine policemen and 17 civilians at a police station in Lukqun Township in Xinjiang.” Smithsonian quoting Quartz in 2014
