At the Sacramento protests on Saturday, one Marine Veteran, Dr. Cordie Williams, used a megaphone to challenge police officers dressed in riot gear. Governor Newsoms’s orders are causing police officers across the state (and elsewhere) to violate their conscience…and their oath. Some readily comply – others are being reminded of their own humanity by the very people they are told to arrest. The Governor specifically said that no more permits to demonstrate would be issued, and police would be told to arrest participants. Dr Williams reminded them that unlawful orders should not be followed.
In the video filmed by Joshua Coleman, Cordie stands with the megaphone in front of the line of police in riot gear and directly challenged them to stand down. Here are excerpts from his comments:
“In the face of tyranny, in the face of freedom, are you going to sit there in your riot gear against peaceful protesters?. Or are you going to say, ‘you know what, it’s time to stand up for my country. Because I took an oath of office and it said, ‘I will defend all enemies, foreign and domestic…
You might lose your job, but I’d rather lose my job than lose my soul… What are you going to tell your little boy or your little girl tonight? That you took your baton and you crushed somebody’s skull, who was a mom? Is that what a tough guy does? That’s not what honor, courage, and commitment means in the Marine Corps…
We always have in the military, we have ‘what’s a lawful order.’ And you’ve gotta check your nutsack when you’re given an order, and you’ve gotta say, ‘is this a lawful order or is this a bullshit order?’
When something’s a bullshit order, and it doesn’t pass the sniff test, that’s when you say, ‘Sergeant,’ that’s when you say, ‘Colonel,’ that’s when you say, ‘General,’ that’s when you say, ‘Governor, I’m not doing that. I didn’t sign up for that.”
Other protesters also challenged police, a bit more gently, by talking to them about their families, and asking them if they really wanted to be there.
“We sat there cross-legged and talked to the cops. They had their visors up and one of them took his mask down to talk to us. I asked him if he had kids; told him I’m a mother. His voice cracked as he told me he hadn’t seen his son in six weeks. I said, I don’t want to be here, but I have to be. I think you feel the same way. He said yes. I said I hope you never forget this day, and he looked me right in the eye and said, I won’t.” Beth S.
How much longer will anyone be able to elicit any kind of emotion from those who are required to enforce the egregious lockdown orders? There may be damage to America’s future that people do not realize. The time is rapidly leaving when we will be able to reason with anyone on the opposite side and get a soft response. It’s already nearly impossible between left and right. The harsher the punishment for disobedience, the more difficult it will become to reach the human beings inside. Hardness of heart is incredibly deceptive, and it causes blindness.
Dr Cordie Williams seemed to reach the police in riot gear with his challenge to their integrity. Whether they stood down or were simply changing places is unknown. Beth and her friends elicited emotion from a few police officers. How much longer before the sides become so hard that no inroads can be made?
