Knoxville Shooting Update: Suspect Died at Scene

When most news media showed a black male being led away from the scene of the Knoxville Shooting yesterday, they thought (as we did) that he was the suspect. Apparently that was incorrect. New information this morning reveals that the black male in the photo was a person detained, but was apparently not the actual shooter. The suspect was a student at the Austin East Magnet High School who was shot and killed by police after he opened fire on the officers that responded.

The Knoxville Police Department said officers responded to reports of a “possibly armed” male suspect around 3:15 p.m. at the high school.

Police found the student in a bathroom, Tennessee Bureau of Investigative Director David Rausch said at a news conference. Police ordered the student to come out, but he wouldn’t comply, and that’s when he reportedly opened fire, Raush said. Police fired back.

“Upon approach of the subject, shots were fired,” the Knoxville Police Department wrote on Facebook. “A KPD officer was struck at least one time and transported to the UT Medical Center with injuries that are not expected to be life-threatening.”

The officer, who was hit in the leg, later was taken into surgery, authorities said. The student, meanwhile, died at the school.

No names of those involved in the Knoxville shooting have been released. The Knoxville officer injured is expected to recover. The Principal was not killed, in spite of the rumors on social media. The question still remains about why the student who died brought a gun to school, or why he refused to come out of the bathroom when police commanded him to do so.

Austin East Magnet High School canceled classes for Tuesday and Wednesday and are only open for counseling to students who want it.
