Kazan, Russia: Mass School Shooting Kills 9.

A gunman opened fire inside school #175 in Kazan, Russia on Tuesday at 9:20 a.m. local time, leaving 7 students, and 2 staff dead. Twenty-one others were wounded, six of them critical. The 19 year old gunman was a former student at the school. Yes, mass shootings happen in other countries. And Russia’s gun laws are strict.

The teacher who was killed, Elvira Ignatyeva, tried to shield a student. The students who were killed were reportedly 8th graders: 4 boys and 3 girls, the teacher, and a female school employee.

Kazan is the Capital of Tatarstan in Russia, which is about 510 miles East of Moscow. The suspect was identified as Ilnaz Galyaviev, a former student.

Russian media report that several people have been killed and wounded in a school shooting in the city of Kazan. Russia’s state RIA Novosti news agency reported the shooting took place Tuesday morning, citing emergency services.

Mr Minnikhanov confirmed the deaths of seven children – four boys and three girls – as well as a female teacher and a female school worker at School No 175. It is believed the children were eighth graders (aged around 15).

Eighteen children and three adults were being treated in hospitals for gunshot wounds, fractures and bruising, Mr Minnikhanov added.

The attack began at about 09:20 local time (06:20 GMT), a source in the emergency services told Russian news agency Tass. The first signal from a panic button at the school was sent five minutes later.

In Russia, mentally ill people are not allowed to have guns. Except this suspect stated that he was a “god” and that he wanted to kill “a large amount of biomass” on the messaging app Telegram. His shotgun ownership permit was less than two weeks old, although authorities did not specify what kind of gun was used in the shooting.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is planning a “review” of Russian gun laws after this tragic event. Sounds familiar.
