Indiana Republican Congresswoman Jackie Walorski, 58, her Comunications director Emma Thomson, and District Director Zachary Potts were all killed in a headon collision in Elkhart, Indiana on Wednesday afternoon. Congress is not in session at this time, but Pelosi’s spokesperson Drew Hammill announced that the Speaker ordered the flags to half staff in her honor.

On August 3, 2022 at approximately 12:32 PM the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle crash on SR 19 south of SR 119. A northbound passenger car traveled left of center and collided head on with a southbound sports utility vehicle.

All three occupants in the southbound vehicle died as a result of their injuries:

Jackie Walorski, 58, Elkhart, Indiana
Zachery Potts, 27, Mishawaka, Indiana
Emma Thomson, 28, Washington, DC

The sole occupant of the northbound vehicle, Edith Schmucker, 56, Nappanee, Indiana was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Elkhart County Coroner’s Office and the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office are conducting the investigation.

Walorski was considered a strong Conservative who loved her constituents. She was not a household name because her persona was one of humility while serving her constituents. That’s a rarity in the DC swamp.

A former Indiana state lawmaker, Walorski was first elected to Congress in 2012 and was running for her sixth term this fall. She was well-liked by her Republican and Democratic colleagues in the House, where she was close to McCarthy and his leadership team.

McCarthy named her the top Republican on the House Ethics Committee, and she was set to be chairman of the bipartisan committee if Republicans won the majority in November.

The ability to get along with people who strongly disagree with you is a gift. Even Democrat Tammy Duckworth said that she always listened, even though they rarely voted the same. Accolades and tributes poured in from both sides of the aisle.

Horrific news. Rep. Jackie Walorski was always willing to listen to my perspective even if we don’t always vote the same way. Rest In Peace, my friend.

Tammy Duckworth, D-Illinois

Rest in peace, Jackie Walorski and all involved.
