A record low turnout to the Iranian Presidential elections on Friday spoke of the pre-determined result present in their elections. Iranian hardliner Sayyid Ebrahim Raisol-Sadati (also known as Ebrahim Raisi) won a “landslide victory” with only around 48% of the voters participating. That’s not counting the nearly 4 million or 10% who expressed their anger by dropping off invalid ballots. (Daily Caller)

Despite Ebrahim Raisi's victory, the unprecedented high percentage of 'blank & void votes', for which some had campaigned on social media – at least over 10% of the cast ballots or around 4 million – was a clear statement of #Iran's electorate's disillusionment. The Iranian regime will soon install a hardline president in a rigged election. All 3 candidates were pre-approved by Supreme Leader Khamenei. Frontrunner Ebrahim Raisi is a hardline mullah who ordered mass executions of political prisoners.Senator Bill Hagerty on Twitter
Iranian hardliner Raisi’s victory comes at a high price. The Iranian people had been encouraged to raise up against the regime and boycott the fake elections. One of the candidates was disqualified, three others dropped out, and the list of others running was short (4). Raisi received a little over 17 million votes out of the 59 million people eligible.

The Iranian hardliner was sanctioned by the Trump Administration in 2019 for his part in the executions of juvenile Iranians, and crackdowns on thousands of Iranian citizens.
Today, OFAC designated Ebrahim Raisi, the head of Iran’s Judiciary, who was appointed by the Supreme Leader in March 2019. OFAC designated the former head of Iran’s Judiciary Sadegh Amoli Larijani Larijani in January 2018 pursuant to E.O. 13553 for his administrative oversight over the executions of individuals who were juveniles at the time of their crime and the torture and other cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment of prisoners in Iran, including amputations.
According to a United Nations report, Iran’s Judiciary sanctioned the execution of seven child offenders last year, and two so far in 2019, despite human rights law prohibitions against the death penalty for anyone under age 18. There are at least 90 child offenders currently on death row in Iran. In addition, between September 2018 and July 2019, at least eight prominent lawyers were arrested for defending political prisoners and human rights defenders, many of whom have received lengthy sentences by Iran’s Judiciary.
Prior to Raisi’s appointment as head of the Judiciary, he served as prosecutor general of Tehran between 1989 and 1994, first deputy head of the judiciary from 2004 to 2014, and Iran’s prosecutor general from 2014 to 2016. Raisi was involved in the regime’s brutal crackdown on Iran’s Green Movement protests that followed the chaotic and disorderly 2009 election. Previously, as deputy prosecutor general of Tehran, Raisi participated in a so-called “death commission” that ordered the extrajudicial executions of thousands of political prisoners in 1988.Excerpts form US Treasury Dept sanctions November 2019
Raisi reportedly approved the mass execution of between 3,500 to 15,000 people in 1988. Some have speculated that Raisi may be jockeying for the head position when Ayatollah Khamenei passes on – since the Ayatollah held the position of President himself some years ago.
“Ebrahim Raisi’s rise to the presidency follows an electoral process that was conducted in a highly repressive environment and barred women, members of religious minorities and candidates with opposing views from running for office. We continue to call for Ebrahim Raisi to be investigated for his involvement in past and ongoing crimes under international law, including by states that exercise universal jurisdiction.”Secretary General of Amnesty International Agnès Callamard to Reuters
The bottom line: in a rigged election the outcome can be deadly.
