Huawei Equipment on US Cell Towers Can Snoop or Disrupt Military Communications

When he was in office, President Trump initiated policies which virtually banned Huawei from the United States. But much of their equipment still exists on US cell towers…and the FBI says that Huawei equipment near strategic military bases can listen in or actually disrupt communications. The situation exists primarily near Chinese land purchases that could even disrupt the US Strategic Command which oversees US Nuclear capability.

We recently reported on the Chinese purchase of over 300 acres in North Dakota for a “corn mill” that isn’t close to the corn fields. The purchase is near to a strategic US military base, which has some analysts concerned about spying.

By examining the Huawei equipment themselves, FBI investigators determined it could recognize and disrupt DOD-spectrum communications — even though it had been certified by the FCC, according to a source familiar with the investigation…

Among the most alarming things the FBI uncovered pertains to Chinese-made Huawei equipment atop cell towers near US military bases in the rural Midwest. According to multiple sources familiar with the matter, the FBI determined the equipment was capable of capturing and disrupting highly restricted Defense Department communications, including those used by US Strategic Command, which oversees the country’s nuclear weapons.

While broad concerns about Huawei equipment near US military installations have been well known, the existence of this investigation and its findings have never been reported. Its origins stretch back to at least the Obama administration. It was described to CNN by more than a dozen sources, including current and former national security officials, all of whom spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

Interstate 25 and other highways into the nation’s heartland have numerous highly classified military installations along those routes. One of them includes the US Strategic Command and the United States Nuclear arsenal. The rural telecom companies have sought out cheap Chinese technology from Huawei to meet their needs due to other types being too expensive.  Ripping the equipment out and replacing it with other types is prohibitive in spite of the Federal government planning to do it. The wheels have been turning slowly on that project.

Huawei complains that its equipment is exceptional and has no capability to spy on US military bases or disrupt military communications. The rural telecom companies clai they monitor their equipment continually and have found no problems. Intelligence officials say otherwise. They began to notice that Huawei was selling cheap equipment to rural areas that didn’t appear to be profitable to the Chinese company. So the FBI launched an investigation that was secret until now.

One company, Viaero, mounted cameras to ostensibly monitor the weather for local television stations, but officials are concerned that Beijing can inadvertantly monitor troop movements from nearby F.E.Warren Air Force Base.

America thought China was its friend. But increasingly they have begun to realize that is not the case. Everybody except Joe Biden and his family, of course.
