General Joseph Dunford, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, wrote a blog post in which he reminded military members that they must remain committed to their oaths regarding the civilian command structure of the United States. Is he worried about military members joining a revolution?
“While we must always safeguard our professional integrity, extra vigilance is required during any political transition. Our individual and collective obligation during this election season is twofold. First, we must recognize that we have one Commander in Chief, and until authority is transferred on January 20, 2017, the Joint Force must remain clearly focused on and responsive to the existing National Command Authority. Second, the Joint Force must conduct itself in such a way that the new administration has confidence that it will be served by a professional, competent, and apolitical military. This is especially important in the context of delivering the best military advice.” General Joseph Dunford
This election season has shown more political influence being exerted by former and current military members than ever before. When a group of 88 Retired US Generals Joined the Trump Train, and General John Allen endorsed Hillary, General Dunford was said to be infuriated. Their active campaigning for political candidates is something new. And it’s something Dunford is unhappy about.
So what will happen if they do not heed his advice? If Hillary steals the election, the military can expect to be treated like a pile of dog poop for the duration. They will have to honor their oaths in spite of Her Royal Arrogant Nastiness.
If Trump wins, they will have to honor their oaths even if they disagree with his ideas.
Will they honor that oath? Would our own military join the patriots against the government? Or would they break into factions of differing political views, a scenario that could end up as a bloody mess.
We can pray that if things go south in the United States, our military will have the wherewithall to pick the right side, the side of the citizens and work to protect them. The alternative is not something either General Dunford, or any of the rest of us want to see.
