A former Del Mar College student named Adam Salim Alsahli attempted to crash through the barricades at NAS Corpus Christi, as we previously reported. He was shot to death after engaging security guards. The FBI says it was terrorist-related. There also may be a “person of interest” still at large. This is the second terror-related incident at a Navy facility in the last 6 months, and the third shooting.
“We have determined that the incident this morning at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi is terrorism-related. We are working diligently with our state, local and federal partners on this investigation which is fluid and evolving. The subject is deceased. The scene is still being processed. We may have a second related person of interest at large in the community but we would encourage the public to remain calm.” Supervisory Senior Resident Agent Leah Greeves on May 21 USNI
The Navy reported that the female security guard who was shot had the bullet lodge in her protective vest, and was later released from the hospital. They stated she rolled over and immediately raised the barricade, which prevented the suspect’s vehicle from entering the base.
“The Sailor who first encountered the shooter displayed tremendous courage and took immediate action under fire that allowed Navy Security Forces to respond quickly and effectively. The gate sentries and responding units promptly contained the situation and prevented the suspect from gaining access to the installation, its employees, and its residents.” NASCC Commanding Officer Capt. Christopher Jason
Investigators at NAS Corpus Christi were initially concerned over the possibility of explosives, but found none in a search of the vehicle and surrounding area. They also searched the home of Alsahli, but did not release their findings. They did not release any information on the second person of interest.
Social media accounts for Alsahli on Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp revealed support for hardline Saudi Islamic clerics, as well as jihadists such as Ibrahim al-Rabaysh, who had been a spokesman for the Yemen branch of Al Qaeda.

The shooter at NAS Pensacola caused other “students” from Saudi Arabia to be banned from the Naval Facility and sent home because they weren’t properly vetted in the first place. In this case, Alsahli was a student at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi. It appears he was not properly vetted before entry into the United States as well.
