FBI Director: Greater Magnitude of Terror Attacks Coming

At a Cybersecurity conference at Fordham University on Wednesday, FBI Director James Comey made a chilling prediction: “At some point there is going to be a terrorist diaspora out of  Syria like we’ve never seen before. Not all of the Islamic State killers are going to die on the battlefield.”

Diaspora: a dispersion of people

Comey’s remarks stemmed from the belief that ISIS/Daesh is losing territory, and will ultimately be defeated in Syria and Iraq. But he stated that such a scenario will eventually cause terrorists to disperse into Western Europe and even the United States. He stated that “really dangerous people” will be scattered into other countries.

The New York Times (NYT) reported

He drew a parallel between this scenario and the formation of Al Qaeda more than a quarter-century ago, which drew from fighters who had been radicalized fighting in Afghanistan in the 1980s and early 1990s.

“This is 10 times that or more. This is an order of magnitude greater than anything we’ve seen before. We saw the future of this threat in Brussels and in Paris [terrorist attacks earlier this year]…that challenge is going to come.”

Can they stop it?

With this warning and dire prediction, there are questions that arise: will his agency be able to stop attacks given their track record of letting known jihadists off the hook? [i.e. Omar Mateen]

He told the conference that it was difficult to track “lone wolf” attackers, and social media or dark net methods of recruitment.  He said that it was “increasingly difficult” to track people who used a knife or a vehicle in an attack.

The FBI and CIA recently held a job fair in Dearborn, Michigan that was designed to “increase diversity” in the organizations. Question: how much will this influence the 1,000 investigations currently being conducted? Will we once again release a terrorist due to political correctness?

There is no doubt it’s coming here to the United States. The question is: will we be ready for it, or will someone drop the ball, placing hundreds of Americans at risk?
