Facebook Censors Conservative News
It has been no secret, over the years, that Facebook is a left-leaning social media platform to say the least. Conservative pages, whether they be individual users or official news websites, have experienced some form of bias on the social website. Posts have been known to be blocked, censored or hidden from the forefront of the news feed. Some pages, including Uncle Sam’s Misguided Children itself, have even been banned for mysterious and hollow reasons.
Of course, the right has been accused of fabricating this bias, and many on the left have labeled it as a non-issue. Well, the dispute is over. Several people who have worked with Facebook – curators, as they are called – have come forward and admitted that there is bias when programming the “Trending Now” stories on the social media platform. Workers have purposely omitted conservative-leaning news pages from list of trending stories. The New York Post quoted one of the curators:
“Depending on who was on shift, things would be blacklisted or trending,” a former journalist who worked as a “news curator” for the site told Gizmodo. “I’d come on shift and I’d discover that CPAC or Mitt Romney or Glenn Beck or popular conservative news topics wouldn’t be trending because either the curator didn’t recognize the news topic or it was like they had a bias against Ted Cruz.” The ex-worker said he kept a list of suppressed topics, which included Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, the Drudge Report and murdered Navy SEAL Chris Kyle.”
Facebook Denies Allegations
Facebook has issued a public statement denying the allegations of bias. USA Today published that statement, which was delivered via e-mail. It said:
“We take allegations of bias very seriously. Facebook is a platform for people and perspectives from across the political spectrum. Trending Topics shows you the popular topics and hashtags that are being talked about on Facebook. These guidelines do not permit the suppression of political perspectives. Nor do they permit the prioritization of one viewpoint over another or one news outlet over another. These guidelines do not prohibit any news outlet from appearing in Trending Topics.”
The Guardian also quoted one Facebook curator as denying having seen any conservative stories being blacklisted. However, the reports remain consistent that not did were conservative pages suppressed, but left-leaning news stories, such as those related to or praising Black Lives Matter, were pushed to the forefront of Trending Topics even when they were not currently being talked about by many people. To boot, the Senate is now investigating Facebook on this issue, and Misguided Children will be reporting on it as more developments are published.
