Dr Seuss – Read Across America Day Now ‘Woke’

By Faye Higbee

First, a leftist organization called Learning for Justice that promoted reading demanded the Dr Seuss be cancelled and that children not read his books. Then Biden also didn’t mention Dr Seuss as something children should read. March 2, 2021 is Dr Seuss’ 117th birthday, and traditionally called “Read Across America Day.” Not this year. This year it’s “woke” as six Dr Suess books will no longer be published because of the “racial undertones.”

“Realizing that many schools continue to celebrate ‘Read Across America Day’ in partial recognition of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, it is important for us to be cognizant of research that may challenge our practice in this regard. As we become more culturally responsive and racially conscious, all building leaders should know that in recent years there has been research revealing radical undertones in the books written and the illustrations drawn by Dr. Seuss.

“Orientalism, anti-blackness, and white supremacy” in Dr Seuss books

After 50 of his books were examined by the leftists, they concluded that there wasn’t enough “diversity” in them, and some of the illustrations were racist.

After the Loudon School District and Learning for Justice’s action went national, the Dr Seuss organization pulled 6 books from their repertoire because the illustrations were “racist.”

“And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street,” “If I Ran the Zoo,””McElligot’s Pool,” “On Beyond Zebra!,” “Scrambled Eggs Super!” and “The Cat’s Quizzer” were pulled by the Dr Seuss organization for their “racist” illustrations. Amazon removed them, except for the usual 3rd party sellers, and those prices were astronomical, ranging up to $2500. (Daily Wire).

Two examples of illustrations from “If I Ran the Zoo”:

Were these images intended to be racist? Probably not.

I believe the reason for this racism is to create exotic and exciting animals. Seuss pulled from stereotypes of other countries and portrayed qualities of those stereotypes so that children would recognize them as something different from animals they see in normal zoos. It doesn’t excuse the racism, but explains it’s purpose in these earlier books.

There’s a huge difference between deliberate maliciousness and the light-hearted way in which Dr Seuss drew his characters. But the woke movement insists they’re all the same, thereby destroying childhood joys like the poems of Dr Seuss. So on a day that was created specifically on Dr Seuss’ birthday for children to read, the woke mob has cast doubts over his books.
