The Broward County Deputies Union issued a vote of “no confidence” and is reportedly asking Governor Rick Scott to suspend Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel. And it isn’t just for the incompetance of handling the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The vote on Thursday was 534-94.
Giving away taxpayer gas
According to WPLG, NAPA Auto Parts, which has a contract with Broward County Sheriff’s office to provide parts for vehicles, has been filling up their vehicles for free at BSO gas pumps. The gas is publicly funded, and NAPA filled up 5,786 gallons of it in just one year.
When the union confronted the Sheriff over it in 2016, he promised to fix it. Instead, the gas cards were simply reissued under a different account number. The situation is partly what fueled the no confidence vote for Sheriff Israel. Advocates for the Sheriff say that the Union is not telling the truth, and that the gas deal was a way to offset the cost of the contract.
The vote of no confidence
BSO Union President Jeff Bell announced the results of the no confidence vote at a press conference yesterday.
“Amazing leadership starts from the top, and there is no amazing leadership here. We are a ship out at sea with no power — adrift.” Deputy Jeff Bell
Meanwhile, Blue Lives Matter reported that Coral Springs PD released a report from the CSPD officers who actually entered the building.
“I arrived within two minutes. As I made a left from Pine Island Road onto Holmberg Road, I saw approximately four Broward County Sheriff’s Office vehicles parked in the west bound lane with their personnel taking up exterior positions behind their vehicles.” CSPD Officer Wilkins
The issue of a Broward County deputy napping on duty, the SRO and other deputies failing to stop the shooter, the woman supervisor who told the men to stage instead of enter the building, a failure to do anything about Nikolas Cruz when they knew he was mentally off, all of that plus the gas issue has led to the Broward County Deputies’ Union to contact the Governor and ask him to remove Scott Israel from his position as Sheriff.
It has taken serious courage for union members to brave the ire of the Sheriff by standing against him.
