Kimberly Potter spent 26 years on the Brooklyn Center police force. But on April 11, her career may have come to a brutal end with the shooting of Daunte Wright. His death was ruled a homicide by the coroner, and the police state it was an accident because Kimberly stated she thought she was grabbing her taser but instead was grabbing her gun. She didn’t pay attention, which is a real problem if a person is in law enforcement.
“As you can hear, the officer, while struggling with Mr. Wright yells ‘Taser! Taser!’ several times. That is part of the officer’s training prior to deploying a Taser, which is a less lethal device. “
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension identified that officer Monday evening as Kim Potter, a 26-year veteran with the Brooklyn Center Police Department.
“As I watched the video and listen to the officer’s commands, it is my belief that the officer had the intention to deploy their Taser but instead shot Mr. Wright with a single bullet,” Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon said. “This appears to me from what I viewed and the officer’s reaction in distress immediately after that this was an accidental discharge that resulted in the tragic death of Mr. Wright.”
Gannon said Wright was pulled over for expired tabs, and that’s when officers discovered there was a warrant out for his arrest for having a firearm without a permit. Wright did not have a gun on him at the time he was pulled over, according to the chief.
Later in the press conference, Gannon was asked if he believed the officer who shot Wright should be terminated. He said the officer deserves due process, but also said, “I think we can look at the video and ascertain whether she’ll be returning.”CBS 4 Minnesota
How could an officer mistake a taser and a real gun? It is a rare occurrence, but does happen. There are 9 cases of such mistakes being made since 2001. Nine. Not many. But the solution would be simple: use tasers that look and feel different than a real gun.
Reasons cited include officer training, the way they carry their weapons and the pressure of dangerous, chaotic situations. To avoid confusion, officers typically carry their stun guns on their weak sides — or their nondominant hand — and away from handguns that are carried on the side of their strong arms. This is the case in Brooklyn Center, where Gannon, the police chief, said officers are trained to carry a handgun on their dominant side and their stun gun on their weak side.ABC

So first, he wasn’t pulled over for the air fresheners attached to his rearview mirror, although that too is illegal in Minnesota. His mother claimed she gave the car to him, and if so, no one renewed that registration. But there is one interesting fact that has come to light after everyone hopped on the fact that he’s a father: he’s also a possible gang member.
Latest #BLM violence near Minneapolis sparked by police shooting of #DaunteWright. He was wanted on a warrant when he attempted to flee by car. He was shot & drove a distance before crashing into others. His FB is filled w/him flashing gang signs, using drugs & showing off cash…
The claim from #DuanteWright‘s mother & #BLM activists that he was killed by police over air fresheners is unsubstantiated. There was a warrant for his arrest. He resisted arrest & got back in the vehicle & tried to speed off. He nearly killed others during the failed escape.
Update: #DaunteWright was in the process of getting arrested by @BPPD for a weapons charge & escaping police before he was killed yesterday, sparking #BLM race rioting & looting. The criminal complaint says he had an illegal Ruger .45 pistol. He skipped his court date this month.Andy Ngo
Here is the court action that created the warrant:
All in all, the Daunte Wright shooting in Brooklyn Center led to massive protests, destruction of businesses, and looting. Whether or not the officer meant to shoot him is irrelevant now, as the wheels of BLM are in play. She will be fired for her mistake, and likely prosecuted for homicide. It’s a tragedy on both counts.
