Cop, New Dad Killed at SC Mall – Suspect in Custody

Another police officer was shot on duty today just prior to 8.a.m. in the small town of Forest Acres, South Carolina. Officer Greg Alia, 32, was killed when he responded to a report of a suspicious person  sitting in a van at the Richland Mall. One man is in custody, Jarvis Hall, 34.

An emotional Police Chief Gene Sealy told reporters that officers responded to a report of a suspicious person in a van  in the parking lot at the SC Mall.

“He was an outstanding young man, he was an outstanding police officer, he was a role model for other officers.” Chief Gene Sealy

The suspect, Jarvis Hall, bolted from the car , and was chased through the mall. When confronted by officers, a struggle ensued. Hall was armed with both a handgun and a knife at the time. During the struggle, he allegedly pulled the handgun and shot Alia. The other officers managed to subdue the suspect and place him in custody.

Alia was taken to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries

Officer Alia was a 7 year veteran and an FTO- Field Training Officer- for the small department. His wife Kassy had a baby in April, so the loss will hit them hard.

The suspect, Jarvis Hall, has a criminal record, primarily unlawful carrying of a weapon, failure to comply, and solicitation. The charges against him have not been specified at this time.
