China Threatens War Over Taiwan During Singapore Summit

Faye Higbee

In a face-to-face meeting with China in Singapore, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin in Singapore Austin supposedly accused China of “intimidation, provocations, destabilization, aggression, and coercion.” That went well. Chinese Defense Secretary Wei Fenghe warned Austin that “if anyone dares to split Taiwan from China, the Chinese army will definitely not hesitate to start a war no matter the cost.” That, in addition to its newest claim that the Taiwan Strait is not international waters, has passed beyond the standard saber rattling. China threatens war. They’re getting bolder as the US gets weaker.

The Secretary reiterated to General Wei that the United States remains committed to our longstanding one China policy, which is guided by the Taiwan Relations Act, the Three U.S.-China Joint Communiques, and the Six Assurances. The Secretary reaffirmed the importance of peace and stability across the Strait, opposition to unilateral changes to the status quo, and called on the PRC to refrain from further destabilizing actions toward Taiwan.

China threatens war over Taiwan

Washington not only overestimates its own capabilities to make up lies, but also underestimates China’s determination to safeguard its territorial integrity when it wants to set up “rules” for China’s internal affairs, and also intends to blame China for breaking the “status quo.”

China’s Global Times

China underestimates the administration’s ability to lie. Just sayin’.

Over the last several months, since Biden took office, Chinese officials have reportedly stated that the Taiwan Strait is not international waters, and supposedly told US officials that in numerous private talks. Their statement also reportedly caused concern for the Biden administration. The US has routinely sent ships through the Taiwan Strait to keep the waters open. Will all this war rhetoric cause the Biden administration to turn tail and run?

“Appeasement Invites aggression.”

Strength is the only way to handle bullies like China. Unfortunately, the US is compromised by a woke military and a weak occupant of the White House. Taiwan fought hard for their tiny democracy, and they won’t give it up easily. Tiptoeing around that problem is not a good plan.

When asked on May 23 if the U.S. would be “willing to get involved militarily to defend Taiwan if it comes to that,” Biden replied, “Yes, that’s the commitment we made.” Almost immediately after his remarks, a White House official almost moved to say Biden was not communicating any change in policy towards Taiwan.

Could Taiwan repel an invasion by its larger nemesis? Would China actually land on the island or blockade it? These questions and more may be answered soon if the Biden administration continues on its current pathway.
