Chicago Police released surveillance video of a shooting from December 3, 2020 in which a retired Chicago Fire Lieutenant (CFD) was gunned down at around 2 p.m. as he left a popcorn shop. Police believe it was an attempted carjacking.

Update: A 15 year old suspect was arrested in this murder. He has been charged with first degree murder and armed Robbery with a Firearm. His name has not been released. (WGN)

Retired Chicago Fire Lieutenant Dwain Williams, 65, was leaving the Let’s Get Poppin’ shop, when a car containing several would-be carjackers rolled up to his vehicle as it was parked. The retired CFD Lieutenant owned a Jeep Grand Cherokee TrackHawk, a prized vehicle for carjackers. This one was decorated with reindeer antlers and a Rudolph nose. As the suspects jumped out of the suspect vehicle with guns blazing, Williams ran behind the hood of his vehicle and got out his own gun to return fire. It is unknown at this point if one of the three suspects was wounded.

During the ensuing exchange of fire, Williams was shot in the abdomen. The suspects ran off and jumped back into the suspect vehicle. Williams was transported to the hospital, but was pronounced deceased.

The suspect vehicle was recovered, but the suspects are still at large.

Dwain Williams served the Chicago Fire Department for 28 years before retiring about 2 years ago. He joined the CFD in 1992. After his retirement he worked at the Office of Emergency Managment. As of December 6, the reward fund for information leading to the arrest of the suspects had grown to $33,000. The killers are at present unknown, and the city has enlisted the aid of the public to find them.

Williams was married to Karen Armstrong Williams, who described her husband as a “gentle, loving spirit.” You can tell by his smile in the next picture that he loved being a firefighter.

Rest in Peace, retired Chicago Fire Lieutenant Dwain Williams.
