Brooklyn Center, Minneapolis, MN – Daunte Wright, 20, was shot to death by Police shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon as he reportedly attempted to flee after they tried to serve a warrant. Rioting and looting ensued, and the Minnesota National Guard was called in. And no, it was not a “peaceful protest.” Brooklyn Center is a suburb of Minneapolis, which is currently in the midst of the Derek Chauvin trial. A female officer has stated she accidentally shot Wright because she thought she was using her taser. Heavy.com
Daunte Wright was a “suspected gang member” who reportedly had a warrant for his arrest. Police have not confirmed that information, nor was it evident on any of the media we could find. The warrant was for a misdemeanor and there is no reference to gang activity.
His family stated that he was reportedly pulled over because of an “air fresheners” hanging from his rearview mirror, which is against the law in Minnesota. The officer who shot him is on adminisrtative leave, but will likely be fired.
Minnesota law prohibits any objects suspended between the driver and the windshield other than: sun visors, rearview mirrors, global positioning systems or navigation systems when mounted or located near the bottommost portion of the windshield; and electronic toll collection devices.Sgt Jesse Grabow, Minnesota State Police in Crookston Times
The mother of Daunte Wright says the 20-year-old called her when he was pulled over by Brooklyn Center police about 1:40 p.m. He told her police pulled him over for air fresheners hanging in the mirror, she told reporters.
The mother says her son asked her for car insurance information over the phone, as the car was hers but she gave it to Daunte two weeks prior. She said she heard police tell Daunte to get out of the car and that they would explain why once he was out. The mother says she then heard someone yell ‘Daunte, don’t run.’ This is the story from the mother, told in front of crime scene tape. A blanket wrapped around her shoulders, crying in despair.KARE Reporter Chris Hrapsky
Police have not released body cam footage, although they stated the belief that the cameras were activated. The type of warrant they were attempting to serve was a misdemeanor. The female officer who fired her weapon has not yet been identified.
I just want people to know that if you get pulled over, make sure you put your hands up and don’t make any sudden moves, and don’t have air fresheners in your car because that’s why he got pulled overKatie Wright, Daunte’s mother
The ensuing riots and looting after the shooting continued into the night. Police used riot control munitions to attempt to disperse the crowds. The police building was vandalized as was a shopping mall and numerous businesses. (Star Tribune)
Anything people could steal, they did. Windows smashed, police vehicles damaged.
And so begins another round of riots and protests over police and the way they handle contacts before the actual evidence is released. “Accident” or not, it is a tragedy. The judge presiding over the Derek Chauvin trial refused to sequester the jury. Think that wll make fear a predominant factor in their verdict?
