Bastille Day Terror Attack in Nice, France- Multiple Killed

The death toll has skyrocketed in Nice, France, after a man drove a large van into a crowd of people celebrating Bastille Day, then got out and opened fire into the crowd. He was shot dead by police.

The attack occurred at around 10:30 p.m. on the Promenade des Anglais, which is one of the main streets along the Mediterranean. Police found guns and grenades in the truck.

Fireworks, a Jazz Festival, many events had been slated for the day. Bastille Day commemorates the start of the French Revolution.

Terror in Nice

The Guardian reported,

A witness has told the Associated Press that he saw the truck driver emerge from the vehicle with a gun and start shooting after ploughing into the crowd.

Wassim Bouhlel, a Nice native who spoke to the agency near the city’s Promenade du Paillon, said: “There was carnage on the road. Bodies everywhere.”

Sebastien Humbert, the prefect for the Alpes-Maritime area has told BFM TV: “A truck rammed into the crowd over a long distance, which explains this extremely heavy toll.” According to Reuters, Humbert said the truck driver had been shot dead and that he was treating the incident as an attack at present.

Conflicting reports of the death toll have risen to 60, with over 100 injured, but those are estimations. Some media in Europe are reporting a higher death count, at least 73.

At first it was feared that there were hostages, but officials said that none were taken. Immediately following the attack, officials asked residents to remain in their homes.

No claim of responsibility has been made yet, but France has been victim of numerous attacks by ISIS.
