Update: The names of the two victims are: 17-year-old Casey Jordan Marquez and 18-year-old Francisco Isaiah Fernandez.

The town of Aztec only has a population of around 6,500. It’s a tight knit community and this has reportedly shocked them because “everyone knows everyone.” The San Juan Sheriff’s Office will lead the investigation into the shooting. No names have been released at this point.

The school was immediately placed on lockdown, and evacuated. Police cleared each room one by one. Students were bused to McGee park in Farmington for pickup by parents.

As rumors went wild that there were several shooters and more than one school involved, police had to calm the public by explaining that there was only one incident at one school and only 3 dead. The lockdowns at nearby schools were purely preventative in nature.

Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye said in a statement that 15 others were injured in the shooting, but police said only 3 people were dead- 2 students and 1 suspect, “no others wounded.” All were students.
