Army Extremists Slide Includes Hamas, Al-Qaeda… Catholics and Evangelical Christians

By Faye Higbee

Michael Berry, General Counsel of First Liberty, also an officer in the Marine Reserves, warned Congress in his recent testimony not to categorize Catholics and Evangelical Christians as “extremists.” The Army training manual titled “Religious Extremism” contained a slide identifying those two groups along with Hamas, the KKK, and Al-Qaeda. SecDef Lloyd Austin wants all extremists purged from the military. His definitions are too broad, and threaten the freedom… the very fabric of America.

First Liberty also obtained a screenshot of an unclassified slide from a U.S. Army training manual. The slide is entitled ‘Religious Extremism’ and it purports to identify religious extremists. Included among those listed are al-Qaeda, Hamas, and the Ku Klux Klan as groups that use or advocate violence to accomplish their objectives and are therefore rightly classified as extremists.

But also included are Evangelical Christianity and Catholicism, who most assuredly do not advocate violence. Surely, the fact that Evangelical Christians and Catholics hold fast to millennia-old views on marriage and human sexuality does not make them extremists who are unfit to serve.

At a time of turmoil and instability, during which our nation faces many external threats, [this] message is inappropriate and offensive to our service members and those they defend.

Michael Berry, General Counsel of First Liberty and Officer in the Marine Corps Reserve (The Epoch Times)

Nine Army soldiers in 2020 and 17 Marines in 2018 were separated from the military for “extremism, gang or separatist” activities. There were around 1.3 million active military members in the Armed Forces, plus around 800,000 reservists in 2017. One panel member, Mike Rogers (R-Alabama) said that while the number of separations should be zero, “this is far from the largest military justice issue facing our armed services.”

Some members of the panel are concerned about the targeting of veterans and military members by “extremist groups” because they don’t know the scope of the problem. And it seems they are focused solely on January 6th instead of the anarchy of Antifa, BLM and other extremist groups that are far more destructive, some of which have actual ties to the CCP.

Here’s a graphic showing the US military members:

Those are just the current military – then there are the US military veterans:

“There are 18 million U.S. military veterans. Thirty-four were rioters. This means that 17,999,966 of us were not. That’s one out of 529,000.”

Rep Pat Fallon (R-TX)

One Democrat member of the panel poo-pooed Rep Fallon’s statement (typical of Democrats). The rush to find extremists inside the US Military can easily cause innocent men and women to be swept up in the process. Warfighting should be the priority. Particularly if they are classifying people who believe in traditional marriage and biological science as “extremists.”
