Ambush! Deputy Murdered While Pumping Gas

Harris County, Houston, Texas- On Friday night,  Deputy Darren Goforth wasn’t chasing a suspect, he was merely putting gas in his patrol vehicle. Suddenly a man came up from behind and shot the officer – execution style.  After the deputy fell to the ground, the suspect continued firing into his body multiple times. Then he fled in a Maroon Ford Ranger.

Thirty minutes prior to the shooting, Deputy Goforth had responded to the scene of a traffic accident. After investigating the crash, he went to a Chevron station to fill up his police cruiser. A completely unprovoked attack took his life.

Police released a description of the shooter from a surveillance video:  a “dark-complexioned man” who’s about 5 feet 11 inches tall. He had short hair. He was wearing a white T-shirt and red shorts at the time of the shooting and fled the scene in a dark red Ford Ranger.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office launched an intense manhunt for the suspect. At around 2:30 a.m., the deputies were tipped off to a house in Copperfield that had a red pickup parked in the driveway. They converged on it and took one “person of interest”  into custody. He is being questioned at this time, but has not been charged. The search continues for the suspect.

“She was laying on top him. She was saying that was her best friend and that he had two kids.” Witness

Officers and community members were devastated.

“That just rips my heart out, seeing anyone die, especially one who protects us like that. You could just see the officers holding back the tears. I just felt led to pray with them.” Pastor of the Crossbridge Christian Church

“It’s an act of cowardice and brutality the likes of which I’ve never seen.” Harris County DA Devon Anderson

“I’ve been in law enforcement 45 years. I don’t recall another incident this cold blooded and cowardly.” Harris County Sheriff Hickman

Deputy Goforth is the first Texas officer to be killed in 2015. This kind of shocking murder ripples through the entire community, and especially the officers. In cold-blooded executions like this one, everyone from officers to family members to the community as a whole will be seriously affected in the days to come.
