An ordinary hand gesture used by millions of Americans for centuries is now listed as a symbol of hate by the ADL (Anti-Defamation League). The “OK” sign that used to signify “everything’s fine” has now been labelled as racist. However, even the ADL urges caution in assigning that meaning to everyone who uses the gesture.
The ADL wrote: Because of the traditional meaning of the “okay” hand gesture, as well as other usages unrelated to white supremacy, particular care must be taken not to jump to conclusions about the intent behind someone who has used the gesture.
It began as a hoax on 4chan, which we have reported previously when a US Coast Guard employee was removed from a hurricane response for using it.
Daily Wire reported,
Ceding common hand gestures like the “ok” symbol to white supremacists sends its own message. It gives the racists the power to co-opt ordinary behaviors and allows the media and politicians to label innocent people as racists. Just look at what happened when a Chicago Cubs fan made the “ok” hand gesture and was deemed racist, even though the position he held his hand was actually part of a common game played by young boys. The “circle game” involves players trying to get others to look at the symbol while making it below their waist. If someone looks, they get a punch in the arm and teasing. But because the media and places like the ADL have deemed the “ok” hand symbol as racist, this Cubs fan was banned for life and branded a racist.
The media also has tried to do this with the original American flag designed by Betsy Ross. In July, Buzzfeed reported that because that version of the flag was displayed in the home of someone who belonged to a white nationalist group and by students who also displayed a campaign flag for President Donald Trump (remember, the media treats all Trump merchandise as racist symbols), then the flag is a common racist symbol now.
It won’t matter that the ADL specifically says that not all people who use the symbol are haters. It’s on their “list,” therefore the media will hype it up and make sure that innocent people are called racist. Especially if they are Trump supporters. The ADL said that law enforcement needs to be aware of the symbol because it can give them ‘clues’ about who is living in a community.
Basically the issue is that because some white supremacists are using the gesture, the rest of us have to suffer for it. All of which is ridiculous. There are other new symbols added to the hate database: Dylan Roof’s Haircut, and the Confederate Battle Flag (Southern Cross) are just a couple of them.
When society so easily labels everything encountered as “racist”…it does not bode well for the future.
